The round terraces above the sea

Circular ceremony terrace of the hotel cortijo near Los Escullos, open above the coast of Cabo de Gata

Several circular terraces sit on the grounds of this hotel cortijo, completely open above the coast. You marry literally inside a circle, with the sea as your horizon and the mountains of Cabo de Gata behind you.

No other venue I know has anything like it. The shape is clearest in the pictures taken from above — and then you understand immediately why I send couples here when the ceremony matters more to them than anything else.

Ceremony, dinner, party and bed in one place. Nobody has to drive.

Everything in one place

This is the point couples underestimate until they have lived it: nobody has to drive here. The ceremony happens on the grounds, dinner is a few steps away, so is the party, and you sleep in the same house.

At a wedding abroad that is worth more than any decoration. Your guests do not know the area, many have no hire car, some are no longer steady on their feet. If half an hour of driving sits between the ceremony and the reception, the mood drains away — and somebody always gets lost.

There are 16 rooms for 32 guests, all with their own bathroom and terrace, proper hotel standard with service. Two or three rooms take an extra bed.

The round terraces

The ceremony takes place on one of the circular terraces. They are edged with low white walls and lie completely open — nothing stands between you and the horizon.

With larger parties the terraces are also used for dinner. Otherwise the tables stand on the terrace in front of the white arcade, with fairy lights strung between the palms in the evening.

What you should know about the wind

The very thing that makes these terraces special is also their one catch: they are exposed. It is windy up there — not always, but more often than you would think.

In practice that means no tall open candles, no very light fabrics that will take off, and a hairstyle that can cope. I know which direction it comes from and at what time of day — we plan around it together, and then it is a non-issue.

Until the morning

There are no direct neighbours. So the music here runs until six in the morning.

And if the weather turns, you move into the large restaurant area indoors. It is bright, has arched windows looking at the mountains, and it holds the whole party.

The cortijo in pictures

Is this the right place for you?

Yes, if you …

  • have between 40 and 300 guests
  • want the ceremony to be the centrepiece
  • want nobody driving between the parts of the day
  • want to celebrate until the morning
  • prefer hotel service to self-catering

Probably not, if you …

  • are planning a wind-sensitive decoration concept
  • want to accommodate everyone on site — 32 sleep here
  • want to marry directly on the beach
  • want to choose your caterer freely

If you are over 80 guests and need a very large hall, look at the celebration finca above Los Genoveses. If you want a sea view from your dinner table, the cortijo above the fishing village is the one.
