Some weddings are quiet, some are loud. Anastasia and Mathias’s was full of laughter — the kind that spills across the pool and gets caught in the lemon trees. Early May, a small circle of their favourite people, a beach in Agua Amarga, and that feeling of: today everything is allowed to be easy.
I have a soft spot for these small, intimate celebrations. Because nothing is stiff. Because you can see the two of them aren’t ticking boxes — they’re savouring every moment. This boho beach wedding in Cabo de Gata was exactly that from the very first minute — and the very first minute, by the way, was Mathias going for a swim in the pool a few hours before his own ceremony. So much for nervous.
Barefoot into the best day
There are brides who are a bundle of nerves before the ceremony. And then there’s Anastasia. Flower crown in her red curls, lace dress, no shoes — and a smile that wouldn’t leave her face all day. She walked through the garden between bougainvillea and palm trees, her bouquet of olive, lemon and wildflowers loose in her hand. No pomp, no fuss. Just a woman thrilled to marry her person.

The beach ceremony in Agua Amarga
Then the beach. Agua Amarga is one of those places you fall a little in love with instantly — the wide pale sand, the palm trees, the sea that was exactly the right colour that day. Under a white canopy billowing in the wind, they said their I do. Barefoot, a Spanish guitarist playing, their small circle gathered close.

The most beautiful moment was the vows. First Anastasia, voice trembling, notes in hand. Then Mathias. And in between, that laughter breaking through again and again, because these two simply can’t help it. You don’t get married every day — and when you do, let it be like this.

Portraits between rocks, sea and golden light
For the couple portraits we wandered along the cove, to where the pale sandstone rocks rise out of the water. This landscape needs no dressing up — it works entirely on its own. Anastasia gathered her dress, they climbed over the stones, paused, laughed, kissed. Mathias lifted her up, she shrieked, both grinning like teenagers.

And as the sun dropped lower and everything turned that warm gold, there were no more directions needed. Just the two of them.

Lemons, olive branches and endless little details
And then the decor. For Anastasia this was her heart’s theme — and you could tell. Lemons everywhere you looked: hanging on fine threads above the long table, in baskets, on the plates, in the flowers. A few days before the wedding she even hugged the ancient olive tree in Agua Amarga. Olives and lemons — that was her language for this day.

The table sat right by the pool. Bamboo chairs, rattan chargers, gold cutlery, green glasses, white and yellow flowers with olive branches. On every menu a little ‘thank you for being here’, with a drop of Spanish olive oil at each seat.

My favourite detail: the seating plan. ‘Take a shot, take a seat’ — tiny limoncello bottles with each guest’s name and a cheeky note about who’s sitting next to whom. So charming, so them. And as a guest book, postcards from Cabo de Gata were waiting.

A little behind the scenes
A quick aside, because you can actually spot me here a few times: this is exactly what I do it for. Lighting the candles when the light shifts. Straightening the last lemon. Being there when the couple sees their finished table for the first time. That’s the moment that makes it all worth it.

Eaten, laughed, celebrated
The food was Mediterranean and good — Iberian ham, little tapas, tacos, Spanish wine and a cold Estrella. The group was small enough that no one sat at the kids’ table and everyone talked to everyone. Exactly the kind of dinner where you eventually lose track of the time, simply because it’s lovely.

When the sun goes down
And then came the blue hour. The palm trees glowed, the string lights reflected in the pool, the hanging lemons turned into little lanterns. There was a sweet table full of lemon desserts, cocktails at the bar — and eventually everyone was dancing.

Anastasia and Mathias right in the middle of it, flower crown slightly askew, sneakers back on. Exactly how it should be.

What stays
What stays from a day like this? With Anastasia and Mathias, it’s that lightness. That ‘we’ll just do it the way it feels right for us’. A small crowd, big fun, lemons to the horizon and a sea that said yes to everything.
