There are weddings where I stop for a second at the end of the night and think: this is exactly why I do this job.<\/p>\n

Gabby and Sam came over from England. They got married at the end of July in the hills above Moj\u00e1car \u2014 at a finca that didn’t exist in this form before. The bride’s father bought the property, rebuilt and extended it, and turned it into an event venue. This wedding was the test run. The very first one. And honestly: I was curious and a little nervous at the same time.<\/p>\n

It turned into one of the biggest, most summery celebrations I’ve ever been part of. Tapas, proper Spanish food, plenty of wine \u2014 and at the end a live band, a DJ, and dancing until the next morning. If you’re picturing a finca wedding in Andalusia<\/strong>, this is pretty much it.<\/p>\n

Getting ready \u2014 eight bridesmaids, a pool, and a father who had to swallow hard<\/h2>\n

The morning started the way a July morning starts in Almer\u00eda: bright early, already warm by nine, the light still soft. Gabby sat in a white robe while hair and make-up happened around her. No rush, no stress. Exactly how it should be.<\/p>\n

In between, the phone as a mirror \u2014 that one quick look before it all begins. I love those moments. Nothing is staged yet.<\/p>\n

Eight bridesmaids. Sage green robes by the pool, a glass of cava, a lot of laughing. When you fly in from England, a morning like that is already half a holiday \u2014 and that was exactly the mood.<\/p>\n

Then the first look with the girls. Dark green dresses, all lined up, and Gabby walks in. You can practically hear the screaming in the photo.<\/p>\n

And then her father. The man who rebuilt this finca for her. He put his hands on her shoulders and didn’t say anything at all for a while.<\/p>\n

The bouquet: white roses, lisianthus, olive branches and a few green olives in between. Nothing forced. Just what grows here anyway.<\/p>\n

The finca: a renovation built on love \u2014 and a view all the way to the horizon<\/h2>\n

The boys were ready first, as usual. Navy blazers, cream trousers, sunglasses \u2014 standing in front of a white archway with pink bougainvillea spilling over it.<\/p>\n

That archway is one of those details that give the finca its character. Whitewashed walls, terracotta roof tiles, round arches, palm trees, cacti. Andalusian without ever tipping into folklore. And then the view: mountains, the valley, a white village clinging to a hillside in the distance.<\/p>\n

For me as a planner, a location like this is a gift. You barely have to add anything. The setting is already there \u2014 you just have to use it properly and know where the sun sits at 7pm in July. After this wedding I added the finca to our portfolio.<\/p>\n

The ceremony in the courtyard<\/h2>\n

The ceremony took place in the courtyard, late in the afternoon, under a stretched shade sail. In July that’s not a decorative choice, it’s a necessity \u2014 but it happened to look wonderful too.<\/p>\n

Sam stood at the front with his groomsmen, smiling like he couldn’t quite believe it himself.<\/p>\n

Then Gabby came. On her father’s arm, through the open wooden doors, under the lantern, across the terracotta floor.<\/p>\n

And then that hug. Father and groom, in the middle of the courtyard, in front of everyone. Longer than people usually do it.<\/p>\n

Above them an arrangement of olive branches and white flowers. Gabby with a lace fan in her hand \u2014 in an Andalusian July that’s not an accessory, that’s equipment.<\/p>\n

The music was live: a singer and a guitarist, half in the shade of the arcades. When they started, the whole courtyard went quiet.<\/p>\n

And then the recessional. Confetti, applause, Gabby and Sam hand in hand down the aisle.<\/p>\n

Tapas, jam\u00f3n and a guitarist under a tree<\/h2>\n

What came next is the part I look forward to most at Spanish summer weddings: the aperitivo. Not a stiff champagne reception \u2014 proper tapas.<\/p>\n

Jam\u00f3n ib\u00e9rico, carved by hand. Local olives. Pan con tomate. Charcuterie boards carried through the crowd, dressed with olive branches.<\/p>\n

And a guitarist sitting under a tree, just playing, while the guests stood around with a glass in hand. Sun on their backs, mountains in front of them.<\/p>\n

And one detail I’d never seen before: one of Gabby’s aunts sat on the wall, pulled out a small watercolour set and painted the landscape. As her contribution to the guest book.<\/p>\n

Couple portraits in golden light<\/h2>\n

Towards evening the light here gets to a point where a photographer can hardly go wrong. First the girls against the mountains \u2014 eight green dresses, one bride in the middle, every arm in the air.<\/p>\n

Then Gabby and Sam on their own by the pool. Her veil lifted in the evening breeze, she laughed at something he’d said. No direction, no posing.<\/p>\n

Later a few more shots on the curved white staircase. Navy blazer, cream trousers, white dress, white wall, bougainvillea above. Nothing else needed.<\/p>\n

Dinner under festoon lights, with the mountains behind<\/h2>\n

And then the tables were laid. Long wooden tables outside, cross-back chairs, linen napkins, small potted olive trees between the glasses.<\/p>\n

Every place setting had a menu card with a drawing of the finca on it \u2014 and a hand-painted tile in the classic Andalusian pattern as a place card. Every guest got to take theirs home.<\/p>\n

As the sun went down, the festoon lights came on. Over a hundred guests at long tables, palm trees behind them, mountains behind those, and a sky turning from pink to blue.<\/p>\n

People ate, talked, kept refilling. Spanish food, good wine, and eventually that particular volume that happens when a hundred people are genuinely enjoying themselves.<\/p>\n

Then the speeches. Between cypress trees and string lights, with applause that carried right across the valley.<\/p>\n

Band, DJ and a party that ran until morning<\/h2>\n

After dinner everyone moved under the arcades. First a live band, then the DJ. Gabby and Sam opened the dancing in front of the band \u2014 the barefoot part came later, entirely on its own.<\/p>\n

They danced through. Until the next morning. And I don’t mean “until two”, I mean until the sky went light again. That’s how they do it here in summer.<\/p>\n

Why Moj\u00e1car is such a good place to get married<\/h2>\n

Moj\u00e1car is one of the prettiest villages in Andalusia \u2014 a white hill village clinging to the slope, with narrow lanes, flowerpots on every wall and views out to the sea. You can lose half a day there without doing anything in particular.<\/p>\n

Down below is the beach: Moj\u00e1car Playa. And in summer it’s not just a row of hotels, it’s genuinely alive \u2014 chiringuitos, live music by the water, beach clubs that run late into the night. For wedding guests staying a few days, that’s ideal. Beach during the day, something to do in the evening, and nobody getting bored between arrival and the wedding.<\/p>\n

That’s exactly why this area works so well for a wedding weekend: the finca sits quietly up in the hills, and real life is twenty minutes away.<\/p>\n

What stays with me<\/h2>\n

What stays with me is the image of a father who rebuilt an entire finca so his daughter could get married there \u2014 and who ended up on the dance floor himself.<\/p>\n

And the realisation that a big wedding doesn’t automatically mean a formal one. Over a hundred guests, and it still felt like a very long, very lovely family dinner that had got beautifully out of hand.<\/p>\n
